Family-owned SteppingStones isn’t unique in its awareness that Planet Earth is steadily being altered in potentially perilous ways. Enlightened citizens globally know that climate change is here and seas are rising. And like growing numbers of others the SteppingStones family is pleased that political resistance to these climate realities is melting away as surely as the snows of Kilimanjaro.
SteppingStones – manufacturer of the EcoSac® Shopping Bag System (100% cotton & organic bags) – is proud to have been part of the renewable, sustainable movement since well before green was “cool.” And today, as plastic bags are phased out in retail / grocery stores and entire cities & counties, and reusable shopping bags are progressively being phased in, SteppingStones' bags will be there to provide a long lasting, durable, eco-friendly yet aesthetic, option.
The SteppingStones Story:
-
1989 - The business was launched as an environmental company by a well-traveled couple that designed a “system” of bags intended to reduce the amount of paper and plastic that typical American shoppers used. They re-designed the European-style French market bag to meet those needs with quality as the standard. The line offered two canvas bags, two net bags & produce / bulk bags. In 1993, the company was purchased by its main salesperson, Marcelle. Today she and her family offer 10 bag styles with four available in organically grown cotton.
-
We offer non-profit discounts to youth groups & environmental organizations (ex. Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, Earth Share) from the beginning.
-
We helped Ben & Jerry’s distribute “Rainforest Crunch” when their work with Rainforest Action Network (RAN) began. We helped RAN to introduce sustainable forest practices using floral essences by distributing Tropical Botanicals Body Care.
-
We have supported many other “start-up” companies to offer quality reusable bags, packaging or fabrics for their commodities. Supported hemp-cotton fabrics.
-
We have always used recycled paper products and worked to reduce the amount of office waste created, donating 10% of pre-tax dollars in money or time to help organizations that are working to restore & maintain the health of the planet.
-
We work with the local county Public Works Department to educate attendees at Creek Clean-up Days and other environmental events about the dangers of plastic; offering shopping and produce bags for “give-aways.”
-
We donate and contribute to many Earth Day events, the local homeless shelter, Women’s Shelters, school eco-club fundraising and Safe & Sober Graduations.
-
We support California Certified Organic Farmers & the Organic Trade Association.
“My own EcoSac® bags have been used weekly for a family of four, washed and still function perfectly after 20+ years of continued use! We often hear the same from others!”
